Canon Edward Matthews - RIP
Canon Edward (Eddie) Matthews was born on 9 February 1937 and was in Challoner between 1950 and 1955. After studying at the English College, Lisbon, he was ordained priest in May 1962.
He spent many of the early years of his priesthood based at Westminster Cathedral, and he later lectured Liturgy at Allen Hall, then at St Edmund’s, and was subsequently on the seminary staff at Allen Hall in Chelsea.
He will probably be remembered by many Edmundian families as the parish priest of Bishop’s Stortford.
Canon Matthews retired to West Sussex where he died peacefully in hospital on 1 April 2020.
