General

Oliver Elphick was born on 4 January 1930 and came to teach Science in the College in 1954, leaving in 1959. He attended the Star Tavern events in 2008 and 2009.

Sadly Oliver passed away on the 26th April 2024.

Oliver came to the College after completing his National Service, having previously studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. After leaving St Edmund’s, he remained in education for a few years and then entered the Patent Office as an examiner.

One former pupil, Ken Allen (OE 1951-56) recalled “He arrived at the College fresh from Cambridge and has some difficulty controlling a class. An extremely nice man who grew a beard in the hope that it would add to his authority but instead, due to frequent proximity to various chemicals, it became multi-coloured and had rather the opposite effect.”

The funeral will be held at Eastbourne Crematorium, BN23 8AE at 12 noon on Friday 31st May 2024.  Anyone who knew him will be welcome.

May he rest in peace.
